Keep a Record of Your Stressors – There is a unique group of stressors for each person and a stressor can be absolutely anything: events, circumstances, people, tasks, Mastering stress managementwork-related responsibilities, and the like.
As you embark on this journey of stress management, consider keeping a journal to record any thoughts, successes, concerns, etc.

Keeping a journal for managing stress

One section of the journal should be dedicated specifically for documenting stressors. Set up each page so that it has three columns with the headings: time and date, stressor, stress level (1-10).

How you evaluate levels of stress is very important. When you categorize a stressor as a “1,” it means that the stressor annoyed you for a short time.

However when you rate something as a “10,” it indicates that you experienced the mental AND the physical signs of stress (i.e., elevated heart rate, cold extremities, etc.)

The challenge of maintaining a stress management journal

Keeping a journal to document your stress management journey should not be a daunting task. If the act of keeping a journal causes you to stress, you might be overdoing it.

It is not necessary to record every single little stress factor that comes at you. You really only need to keep track of the ones that you remember at the end of the day.

There are some people who can journal throughout the day for a few hours at a time. For most people, this is not possible. Record in your journal at a time and duration that works for you and when it’s convenient for you. But make sure you do indeed write in your journal every day.

In order to overcome any negative beliefs or outdated values that are in contrast to your present goals, you have to identify what they are first.

There are common values and beliefs that can stifle your efforts to manage stress:

“I have no time left for this sort of thing”
“I’d rather sleep than try to manage stress”
iii. “Stress management won’t bring food to the table, my work does”

“I have more important things to do than manage stress”
“Stress management is just not ‘my thing’”
“How will I know if this will work?”
vii. “I’m a hopeless case!”

viii. “I’m not very good at learning new things”

“I don’t have the energy to think about it”
“I think it’s tedious and boring”

Baby Steps are Key – Managing stress isn’t an obscure concept. It is a set of skills that will help you control your stress response in order for you to be happier, healthier, and productive.

Mastering stress management – how long will it take?

The effort of effectively managing stress has given way to an industry of coaches and mentors. It cannot be acquired overnight.

Once you have made the decision to tackle stress management, you must be willing to walk the first couple of little steps in order to accomplish your goals.

There isn’t a huge time investment required for managing chronic stress.

Your sessions in managing stress shouldn’t take more than 20 to 30 minutes. However, if 20 minutes feels overwhelming to you, limit your sessions to no more than 10 or 15 minutes.

That small time investment should provide you adequate opportunity to consider the stressors you faced that day and what your reactions were. Your own self-analysis is one of the key aspects of managing stress.

Approach the whole thing honestly though. You have to keep from justifying any situations where you responded negatively to stressors, or these negative responses will eventually hinder your breakthroughs.
